Enhancing your account security is crucial, and setting up a passkey is an excellent first step. This guide will walk you through the straightforward process of creating and enabling a passkey. Additionally, it will cover how to set up two-factor authentication (2FA), providing an extra layer of protection for your account.

Follow these simple instructions to ensure your account remains safe and secure.

How to set up a Passkey

Step 1: Access your account settings

  1. Click on your profile icon or avatar located at the top-right corner of the forum homepage.

  2. From the dropdown menu, click on the grey person icon (blue star) and then select “Preferences.”

Step 2: Find your security settings

  1. In your account menu, navigate to the second tab and select “Security”.

  2. Then, click on the button “+ Add Passkey”.

Step 3: Begin passkey setup

  1. Click on the “Add Passkey” button.

  2. A prompt will appear asking you to confirm your identity.

  3. Put in your password and click on the blue “Confirm” button

Step 4: Confirm and save

  1. Authenticate using your device’s built-in security feature (e.g., fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN).

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the authentication process.

  3. Once done, your passkey will be set up, and you will see a confirmation message asking you to give your Passkey a name.

  4. Write the new name for your Passkey and click “Save”.

You have now successfully set up a passkey for your account. This additional security measure helps protect your personal information and ensures a safer online experience.

How to set up two-factor authentication (2FA)

Enhancing your account security with two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an additional layer of protection. This guide will walk you through the steps to set up 2FA for your account on the Online Community, ensuring your account remains secure.

Please note: If you currently log in to the Online Community using your Google account, please note that enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) will disable this option. After setting up 2FA, you will need to log in using your Discourse forum username and password, along with the additional 2FA step.

Step 1: Access your account settings

  1. Click on your profile icon or avatar located at the top-right corner of the forum homepage.

  2. From the dropdown menu, select “Preferences.”

Step 2: Find your security settings

  1. In your account menu, navigate to the second tab and select “Security”.

  2. Then click the (blue star) Manage Two-Factor Authentication button

Step 3: Set up your authenticator App

  1. Click on the “+Add Authenticator” button

  2. A QR code will be displayed on the screen.

  1. Open your preferred authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator etc.) on your device.

  2. Use the app to scan the QR code.

Step 4: Verify and complete setup

  1. After scanning the QR code, your authenticator app will generate a 6-digit code.

  2. Enter this code in the provided field on the forum’s setup page.

  3. Click “Verify” to complete the setup.

You have successfully set up two-factor authentication for your account on the Online Community. This additional security measure helps protect your personal information and ensures a safer online experience.
